Careship appoints Andy Wilson to VP, Marketing role after Renovata Search
Careship, the Berlin-based marketplace for elderly care services has appointed Andy Wilson as VP, Marketing, following a successful search by Renovata.
Careship was founded in 2015 by brother-and-sister team, Antonia and Nikolaus Albert, after finding it hard, like thousands of others, to build an appropriate care regime for a loved family member – in their case, their grandmother. The result is a team leveraging technology to provide individual and personalized support to as many families as possible, making it easier to build care programmes in what is a fragmented and often variable-quality market across Europe.
Today, the Careship team has grown to over 70 and the proposition has been rolled out to four regions in Germany, helping over 2,000 families and deploying more than 600 caregivers. The company has raised a total of $11.3M in funding across 4 rounds; most recently a €6M Series B led by Creandum and also featuring existing investors Spark Capital, Axel Springer (whose accelerator has supported Careship from its seed round), Atlantic Labs and new investor, Ananda Impact Ventures.
Starting his career in travel – without doubt one of the most competitive segments for online marketing; Andy has spent 15 years helping great brands become great well-known brands in markets across the globe. His credits include Venere (Rome), Italy’s hotel reservations leader (2004-8) where he was hired as an online marketer but was promoted to lead the marketing operation within 12 months. He then became Commercial Director at Opodo (London, 2008), and then head of e-Marketing for Hotel Club (Sydney, 2009-11). Hotel Club is just one of the brands (including eBookers and CheapTickets) in the Orbitz business, and by 2011 Andy was in San Francisco as Senior Manager, Search Engine Marketing for the whole Orbitz Worldwide group. He moved to Berlin for GetYourGuide AG (2013-15), leaving travel to hone his skills in other sectors with the prolific internet business incubator, Rocket Internet (SVP, Marketing; 2015). Andy soon settled on disruptive agency models: he served as CMO for Star of Service, the professional trades website for the French market and also advises ClickMechanic, the skills-finder for car servicing in the UK.
Reporting directly to Founders Antonia and Nikolaus Albert, Andy will be fully responsible for Careship’s marketing activity; in particular defining and implementing a robust end-to-end performance-led marketing regime. He will drive the acquisition-to-retention lifecycle of both customers and care-givers.
Renovata Partners’ Alia Rehman says “Andy has consistently helped consumer-facing brands ignite their marketing and establish their commercial reputations – whether they are new, unknown and trying to establish a space from scratch, or joining a highly competitive market with mature and rich competitors. In either case, Andy has a reputation for driving rapid growth, and in Careship he is joining an ambitious and powerful proposition which can truly change lives.”
Careship delivers professional, quality-assured care and support services for elderly care patients, improving quality of life for seniors and the people who care for them. The company currently operates in the German market, but is successfully solving problems found in the sector landscape across Western Europe. These include fragmented provision by local agencies (in Germany, €40bn is spent on care annually across 14,000 SME agencies which have an average of only 16 full time employees and under 50 clients each), a lack of transparency and available advice, inconsistent and poor user experience, and enormous inefficiency. Careship solves all these problems with a capable and liquid on-demand talent pool.
